CAU Sweeps Doubleheader From Allen For Third Straight Win

 
Johannas Bentley drove in nine runs and had five hits, including two home runs, to lead the lead the Clark Atlanta University Lady Panthers softball team to a doubleheader sweep over Allen University Saturday in Columbia, S.C.

The Lady Panthers scored 33 runs against Allen, who is winless this season.  CAU also battered Yellow Jacket pitching with 27 hits and five homers on the day.

In Game 1, put the game out of reach early as Arianna Hansley opened the game by getting hit by a pitch, Sarah Colbert walked, and then Bentley slammed a three-run home run to put CAU up 3-0. Jayla Hill then walked and Joh'nell Clark was hit by a pitch.  Amaya Chesterfield then stepped up and hit a three-run homer that extended the CAU, first-inning lead to 6-0.

Breighana Spencer opened the bottom of the first with a solo homer for Allen in the bottom of the first to make it 6-1.   In the second, CAU added two more runs when Hansley and Tatianna Kelly both walked and eventually stole home to make it 8-1

The Lady Panthers added three runs in the third and two in the fourth to put the game out of reach in their 13-4 victory.

Bentley was 3-for-3 with two singles to go with her home run.  She drove in four runs and scored once.  Chesterfield had three RBIs and scored twice. Hill had a hit, an RBI and scored a run while walking twice.  On the mound, Hill got the complete game win, striking out eight, giving up seven hits and four runs.

Spencer led Allen with two hits, an RBI and a run scored.  Daeshonna Beckham-Timmons took the loss, giving up eight hits and 13 runs, twelve of them earned.  She struck out five batters but walked twelve.

The second game started much like the first game as Hansley walked, and Kelly singled, followed by another Bentley home run to put CAU up 3-0.  After Sarah Colbert doubled, Chesterfield drove her in with a triple. Amarriah Britton singled in Chesterfield and then scored on Alexis Scott's double to give CAU a 6-0 lead in the first.

In the second, Clark walked and then scored when Rachel Carroll homered.  Britton added an RBI single that gave CAU a 9-0 lead. CAU added two more runs in the third and then six runs in a fourth inning that was highlighted by a Hansley two-run home run.  CAU went on to win the game 18-4.

Bentley was 2-for-3 with two hits, five RBIs and two run scored. Britton was 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Hansley was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, Carroll was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored.  Chesterfield had two hits, an RBI and scored three times. Kelly had two hits, an RBI and scored three times, while Scott was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Chesterfield got the complete-game win, giving up just four hits, four runs, three earned.  She also struck out six Allen hitters.

The Yellow Jackets were led by Timmons' who had a hit and two RBIs.  Morgan Moon took the loss CAU hitters battered her for 19 hits, 18 runs and ten walks.

The final game of the three-game series begins today at 1 p.m. CAU returns to Lady Panthers Field on Wednesday, April 13 when they host Benedict College in a make-up game at 2 p.m.
