JASPER, Ala. - In what proved to be the final Clark Atlanta University athletic contest of the 2019-20 academic year, the Lady Panthers were done in by a six-run second inning in losing to Spring Hill 7-1 on Friday, March 13 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Crossover.
CAU (5-11, 1-3 SIAC) had been scheduled to play six games against West Division opponents during the Crossover but the event was canceled after the first game for all SIAC teams, due to the coronavirus situation. Spring Hill, the defending SIAC Tournament champions, finished 8-7, 4-0 in conference play.
The Lady Panthers gave up six hits – including four straight - and six runs in the second inning to take a 6-0 lead.
But CAU starting pitcher
Brianna Smith had three innings in which she only allowed four or fewer Spring Hill batters to come to bat.
The Lady Panthers scored their only run in the sixth as
Judasia Blalock, who had walked, scored on a passed ball.
Tatianna Kelly doubled for the Lady Panthers while
Kiani Turner,
Chase Gray-Still, and
Keshonna Terrell all had hits.
Smith pitched six innings, striking one and walking only two. She gave up seven runs on ten hits but forced 11 flyouts.
Spring Hill was led by Delaney Thomas who had hit a hit and two RBIs. Sophia Nuzzolillo and Aly Fowler each had two hits.
